Project Complete: Shawfords

Project Complete: Shawfords

We’re pleased to share the completion of Shawfords, a carefully detailed new family home that replaces a modest bungalow with a contemporary house that sits gently in its rural setting.
Working closely with our client and contractor, we designed a 600 m² home that feels both generous and grounded. A large part of the building is set discreetly into the site, with a lower level for garages, workshops and ancillary spaces. Above ground, the simple form draws inspiration from local agricultural barns, using warm brick, traditional clay tiles and crisp detailing that feels robust yet refined.
The house is arranged into two clear parts: a single-storey wing for everyday living and family gatherings, and a two-storey bedroom wing that provides privacy and calm. A generous entrance hall connects these spaces and brings light deep into the plan. Wide terraces and large openings frame long views over the surrounding countryside, helping to blur the line between inside and out.
At the heart of Shawfords is the kitchen, designed and crafted in collaboration with Inglis Hall. Rich oak, brushed black granite and raw brass give the space a warm, tactile feel that balances function and craft. Large panes of glazing and carefully chosen materials connect the kitchen to the landscape beyond, making it a place to cook, gather and spend time together.
Throughout the design process, we worked closely with the client to develop a palette of robust, natural materials and well-resolved details. Carefully placed Crittall-style windows add a subtle industrial character, complementing the agricultural form and giving the house a sense of honest craftsmanship.
Sustainability was central to the brief. High levels of insulation, underfloor heating and a large PV array reduce energy demand, while green roofs and considered landscaping help anchor the building in its setting and encourage biodiversity. Despite its size, the house sits lightly on its plot and is designed to stand the test of time — a comfortable, modern home that respects its place.
Shawfords is a great example of what can be achieved when architect, client and maker work closely together. We’re proud to see this home complete, and even prouder that it reflects the care and collaboration that brought it to life.
